Plans to cut charity red tape announced

Proposals put forward by the Office of the Third Sector could reduce the amount of red tape some charities have to contend with.

The government is planning to raise the minimum income thresholds that govern the reporting requirements placed on charities to reduce the administrative burden on smaller organisations.

It is thought the plans will be of benefit to 20 per cent of registered charities in the UK when they come into effect in 2009-10.

Phil Hope, minister for the third sector, said charities ought to be able to dedicate as much time as possible to their "core" aims.

"These changes will be particularly significant for smaller charities that are often at the heart of the communities they serve so every minute saved in form-filling will, I hope, have a measurable difference on those communities," he commented.

Last month, Mr Hope announced plans to create a £10 million fund for risk capital investment in social enterprises had received positive feedback in a recent consultation.
