Business regulation 'still a burden'
09 October 2008
Complying with business regulations is still proving to be a burden for companies, despite government efforts to improve the situation, a new report has found.
The National Audit Office (NAO) discovered that the Administrative Burdens reduction Programme, which is intended to cut the cost of complying with government regulations by a quarter by 2010, is "providing an impetus" to reduce burdens.
However, just one per cent of businesses surveyed said that complying with regulations had become less time-consuming last year, while 40 per cent said it has had the opposite effect.
Despite these negative findings, the office stated that 46 per cent of businesses feel that regulation is fair and proportionate.
Tim Burr, head of the NAO, said: "The government's initiative to drive down administrative burdens on business has raised awareness of regulatory reform and departments have begun to reduce some burdens."
It is important that "tangible" benefits are now delivered for businesses, he added.
The NAO audits the financial statements of all government departments and agencies.
