MEPs back stronger IP laws for sports coverage
12 May 2008
Dozens of European members of parliament (MEPs) have voted to boost intellectual property (IP) rights in the sports industry following lobbying by Big Sport.
It comes as sporting corporations seek greater power over how events are communicated to the public, leading to conflicts with media organisations, reports the Register, which says some media enterprises are concerned that organisations like the International Olympic Committee and Fifa may wield too much control over news reports.
In Strasbourg, the European Parliament passed a report that calls for the European commission to develop clearer guidelines on the issue. Some 518 MEPs supported the report, compared with 49 who opposed it.
The report was drafted by Greek MEP Manolis Mavrommatis and could be seen as a sign that the EU is starting to flex its muscles in the arena of sporting law ahead of the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland.
According to EUobserver.com, MEPs want member states to draw up lists of events that should be free to broadcast on television.
