Small business owners urged to use contracts

Some small businesses are increasing their risks of getting into disputes by not investing in the right legal protection, it has been claimed.
The Law Society warned too few small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) had not set up current partnership agreements.
The society has teamed up with communications firm O2 on the information campaign after both conducted research showing smaller companies rely too heavily on goodwill.
Around two-thirds of SMEs surveyed by both organisations said partnerships were based on handshakes and trust rather than written contracts.
Law Society president Andrew Holroyd said: "People don't go into business together expecting to fall out, so it's all too easy for them to fail to take the correct legal precautions or seek sound advice before launch."
He added the number of SMEs operating without the right protection was "alarming" and said it was "crucial" businesses had the right documents in place.
SME Web also recently reported research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development showing only 25 per cent of SMEs offer rehabilitation to employees suffering long-term sickness.
