Straw calls for increased judge diversity

14 May 2008

Justice secretary Jack Straw has told MPs that there are not enough judges from black and Asian backgrounds, the BBC reports.

Despite forming two years ago, Mr Straw said that the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) had so far not created a "more diverse judiciary".

Speaking to the Justice Select Committee, Mr Straw acknowledged that largely white, middle class males dominated the judiciary, which did not reflect wider society.

"The expectation that a new system would lead to a more diverse judiciary has so far not been fulfilled. The chairman of the JAC and I are very well aware of that."

"We are determined to do everything that we can to ensure that among the wider benefits of the new judicial appointments system there is a much more diverse judiciary," he added.

The number of women being appointed to the bench is down to 34 per cent this year from 41 per cent in 2005/6, according to JAC figures.
