Saga backs government plans to tackle age discrimination
09 July 2008
Older persons' organisation Saga has welcomed a government paper which aims to put an end to age discrimination.
The group said it supported the move "in principle", saying many of the letters it receives mention discrimination in relation to job opportunities where many employers shun the applications of older people.
Saga mentioned existing laws which allow UK employers to instruct people to retire even if they wish to continue working.
Saga added: "Most people who write to Saga Magazine complain about access to healthcare and how they are kept informed about treatment."
Earlier this month Harriet Harman, minister for women and equality, said measures were needed to put an end to statistics showing thirds of over-fifties feel they are turned down for a job because they are too old.
The equality bill includes new powers to ban all unjustified discrimination against older people, such as denying them medical treatment.
