Asbestos found at 2012 Olympics site
07 July 2008
Small samples of material containing asbestos have been found at the construction site of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Work at one section has been temporarily halted as a precaution but work at the rest of the site is continuing.
Lawrence Waterman, head of health and safety at the Olympic Delivery Authority, says: "As part of our health, safety and environmental monitoring, a small amount of asbestos-containing material has been discovered within the ground of the Olympic Stadium.
"The health and safety of the workforce is our number one priority and we have taken the precautionary measure of stopping work in this area."
Mr Waterman added that the authority is working with the relevant bodies and work is expected to re-start progressively as protective measures are put in place over the next few days.
Construction work at the site began in May, three months ahead of schedule.
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, every employer must prevent the exposure of employees to asbestos "so far as is reasonably practicable".
Where it is not reasonably practicable to prevent exposure, employers must take necessary measures to reduce the exposure and ensure the number of employees who are exposed at any one time is as low as is reasonably practicable.
