Britons to benefit from workplace pension auto-enrolment
16 May 2008
Millions of workers are set to benefit from changes to workplace pension scheme which would mean they are enrolled automatically.
Secretary of state for Works and Pensions, James Purnell, revealed that automatic-enrolment will be extended to insurance-based workplace pensions from 2012.
The Pensions Bill 2007 already allows automatic-enrolment into trust-based pensions, however the move now brings the UK in line with EU consumer protection rules.
Currently around £6.7 billion is saved into Workplace Personal Pensions per year by three million employees, representing the second largest form of private sector pension membership in the UK.
The government believes that the automatic enrolment will benefit the 4.7 million people who work for a company with a Workplace Personal Pension but are not members.
"This announcement will extend the benefits of automatic enrolment to millions more people - giving them the means to save for their retirement for the first time," Mr Purnell said.
Commenting, pensions reform minister Mike O'Brien added: "Automatic enrolment is key to combating the inertia that prevents people from saving and I am pleased that millions of people who work for an employer who offers a Workplace Personal Pension will be able to benefit from this important social reform."
