CBI issues warning on flexible hours rights

Industry representatives have warned government plans to extend employee benefits such as flexible working rights could worsen Britain's unstable economy.

The Independent reports ministers hope more fathers will get access to part-time or flexible hours with an extension to the right to request flexible working to parents with children aged 16 and under.

According to the paper the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has reacted by saying the ideas could hinder the UK's competitiveness.

Quoted by the Independent, CBI deputy director general John Cridland said: "We already have one of the most generous flexible working systems in Europe and the government is already committed to giving more parents the right to request flexible working."

He added the ability of UK firms to compete in the world marketplace could be "hampered" by further measures.

Earlier this week the CBI also welcomed government plans to overhaul the welfare system, in a move designed to reduce reliance on benefits.
