Council could face thousands of employment tribunals

A city council could be inundated with unfair dismissal claims from thousands of staff, according to the Birmingham Mail.
Unions stated that up to 5,000 Birmingham City Council staff have been affected by recent changes to contracts that have been ushered in to accord with a new equal pay policy.
The Single Status pay deal was brought in last month and aims to provide equal earnings across the genders.
However, Unions are reporting that it has led to a cut in pay for some workers and the introduction of new contracts that have not been discussed with employees. This has led to the possibility of claims based on unfair dismissal.
Caroline Johnson, branch secretary for Unison, said: "We are preparing legal cases on behalf of those losing out."
Union leaders said talks with the council have opened up different areas of negotiation such as pay progression and rises in salaries based on timed served.
Tens of thousands of Birmingham residents took to the streets this February to express their discontent against proposed changes concerning the Single Status pay deal.
