Council fined after plumber injures spine
08 July 2008
A council has been fined £10,000 after a worker plunged through a roof skylight and injured his spine.
The trainee plumber fell while changing a water tank in January last year and was unable to work for 12 months afterwards.
Homes for Haringey was found guilty of a health and safety breach at the City of London magistrates' court last week and fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £3,562 in costs.
Health and Safety Executive inspector John Crookes said: "This unfortunate accident could have been prevented had a simple, safe system of work been followed."
He listed secured boards to "create a stable working platform" and crawling boards where access across the unboarded parts of the loft was required as measures which should have been undertaken.
According to Building.co.uk the plumber was at the time employed by Haringey Council, and working for Homes for Haringey, an arms length management group set up to manage the authority's housing.
