Employers urged to comply with new immigration rules

The government is urging employers to ensure they are fully aware of new rules relating to the recruitment of skilled workers from outside Europe.
Under the new system, businesses wishing to employ a skilled foreign worker from outside Europe are required to apply for a licence with the UK Border Agency by the time the new regime comes into effect at the end of November.
Border and immigration minister Liam Byrne said the "tough" new points system will reduce the number of economic migrants arriving in the UK.
"Our message to businesses is loud and clear - if you want to employ foreign workers from outside the EEA you need to apply now for a sponsor licence," he stated.
Earlier this month, Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, called for the government to "make it easier" for businesses to employ people from outside the EU in areas where there are skills shortages.
He said that limiting immigration in such sectors will hinder the economy's ability to grow.
