Ex-Chelsea exec loses employment tribunal
20 August 2008
A former executive at Chelsea Football Club has lost his compensation case in which he claimed the club had made "unlawful wage deductions".
Paul Smith told the London Central Employment Tribunal that the club had withheld £366,250 in wages, the Guardian reports.
However, Mr Smith did not sign a contract of employment with the football club because of differences over salary and bonuses.
The tribunal found in favour of Chelsea, which had previously agreed to pay compensation to Mr Smith over a claim of unfair dismissal.
A spokesman for the club said: "To take the case further was unnecessary and based on little evidence, as demonstrated by the outcome. Chelsea will abide fully with the findings of the tribunal."
The Employment Tribunals Service hears claims on a variety of employment issues, including unfair dismissal, redundancy and discrimination.
Similar in many ways to courts, tribunals must "act independently" and are unable to provide legal advice.
