Fewer women in top jobs
12 September 2008
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has revealed that fewer women are achieving the top jobs in the UK.
In its latest Sex and Power annual report, the commission stated that there are fewer women holding top roles in 12 of the 25 categories it investigated.
Women made progress in only eight categories, with the other five areas remaining at the same level as last year.
Females now account for just 19.3 per cent of all MPs and 11 per cent of directors of FTSE 100 companies.
Nicola Brewer, chief executive of the commission, said: "We always speak of a glass ceiling. These figures reveal that in some cases it appears to be made of reinforced concrete."
There needs to be "radical change" in order to provide support and assistance to people to "work better and release talent", she added.
Established in October 2007, the commission aims to tackle discrimination and reduce inequality, while also protecting human rights.
