FSB welcomes disability discrimination legislation

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is in favour of disability discrimination legislation because it is "steeped in the concept of reasonable adjustment".

Marc Shoffman, a spokesperson for the body, said many small firms will "do all they can" to modify their premises to accommodate the millions of disabled people in the UK.

However, Mr Shoffman stated that the resources available to small businesses to make such changes for the benefit of both employees and customers "will not be as great as those available to larger companies".

Despite this, the "legislation acknowledges the concept of reasonable adjustment being linked to availability and resources", he added.

Figures from the Shaw Trust show 19 per cent of working-age British people have disabilities, yet only half are in employment.

Employment rates are lowest among people with mental health problems, illustrating that trends vary depending on the type of impairment an individual has.

The trust claimed that there are 1.2 million disabled people in the UK presently available to work.
