Mayor Boris says 'no' to positive discrimination

London mayor Boris Johnson has said positive discrimination should not be used by the Metropolitan Police as it seeks to recruit more black and ethnic minority employees.
Mr Johnson told Personnel Today that employers should use more positive action to encourage those from non-white backgrounds to go for jobs or promotion.
According to the magazine, black and ethnic minority workers make up just 8.3 per cent of Metrpolitan Police staff, compared with 29 per cent of London's population.
Mr Johnson told Personnel Today: "I like the positive bit without the discrimination - we want to be proactive and encourage positive action techniques."
Last month secretary of state for equalities Harriet Harman unveiled the equality bill, which outlined plans to allow employers to discriminate in favour of female or ethnic minority job applicants.
The bill also outlined plans to tackle age discrimination and close the UK average pay gap between male and female workers.
