Working time directive agreement 'boosts UK competitiveness'

A senior figure at a leading business institution has praised negotiations which have seen the UK opt out of the EU working time directive.

Louise Morgan, a senior policy adviser at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said the move is essentially a "good deal"?and a positive step for the country's economy.

The directive aims to ensure no employee in the European Union is obliged to work more than an average of 48 hours a week. However, the UK objected to this and fought for the right to opt out.

Ms Morgan said: "What's nice about it is that it?s about workers having the right to choose their own working hours and employers have the flexibility to respond to peaks in demand."

She added the UK's "labour market flexibility" made the country an attractive place to do business.

The CBI aims to create conditions in which companies can prosper and is the premier lobbying organisation for British business on national and international issues.
