EA launches consultation into EP regulations

11 September 2008

The Environment Agency (EA) is inviting feedback on proposed standard rules and generic risk assessments under the Environmental Permitting (EP) Regulations.

Its new set of rules relates to waste operations and a number of low risk installations that form part of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive.

Standard rules dictate how operators are required to carry out certain activities, such as limiting the types of waste they are allowed to bring onto a site.

If they anticipate being able to meet the regulations, they are then able to apply for a standard permit, which the EA states will be "easier than applying for a bespoke permit".

The consultation is open until November 14th, after which the EA will publish the new and revised standard rules.

It is illegal under the EP regulations to operate a regulated facility without an environment permit or to breach any of the conditions attached to a permit.
