Recycling officers call for strengthening of waste legislation

09 June 2008

The UK's recycling officers have responded to a consultation on revisions to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive), saying they would support a strengthening of the legislation.

In the response the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (Larac) called for the promotion of in-store take-back, detailed in-store information and labelling on reuse and recycling and more financial support for local authorities to provide collection facilities.

"Larac supports the assertion that the built-in flexibility of the legislation when subsumed into UK law has lead to a sub-optimal contribution to the improvement of the environmental performance of operators and systems," the response said.

Following the consultation Larac also said it supports an extension of the list of products that come under the directive, believing it would generate more producer responsibility and greater reduction, reuse and recycling of WEEE.

All importers, rebranders and manufacturers of new electrical or electronic equipment are likely to need to comply with the directive.

It came into force in January 2007 and aims to reduce the amount of WEEE produced, encourage reusing, recycling and recovering and improve the environmental performance of businesses that produce, supply, use, recycle and recover WEEE.
