Collaborative approach to family law welcomed

A district judge in Harrogate has welcomed the introduction of collaborative family law in the town.
Judge Helen Wood said she often that the law was good news for children who are often adversely affected by warring couples, reports the North Allerton Times.
Under the terms of the law, the couple and the two lawyers sign a binding agreement not to take the matter to court. If negotiations break down, the couple cannot use the lawyers involved in the collaborative process.
"Collaborative law is a positive approach to separation and could do much to reduce the sometimes devastating effect on children," she told the paper.
Another advantage of collaborative family law is that everything is dealt with in four-way meetings.
According to the Law Society, an increasing number of family law solicitors are choosing to be trained in the area of collaborative family law.
