Divorced couples 'forced to live together'

28 August 2008

A significant number of people in the UK are having to remain in the same house as their ex-partners after divorce because they are unable to sell their homes, it has been reported.

The Guardian reports the housing market slowdown has resulted in couples struggling to sell their homes or take out mortgage finance to buy their ex-partner's share of the property.

However, some relying on the proceeds of the house sale are unable to afford to pay for a divorce if the property is not purchased by someone else, the newspaper noted.

Elizabeth Western, 35, told the newspaper that she and her husband planned to sell the house and split the equity to pay for their divorce when they separated last year but market conditions have meant the property remains unsold.

"The emotional impact is massive and sometimes I feel like tearing my hair out. My only saving grace is that since I've started telling people about it, I've realised how common it is," she explained.

Figures show that between 2005-06 the number of divorces granted in Britain fell to its lowest level since 1977, the Daily Mail reports.
