Expert discusses same-sex divorces

23 June 2008

A family law expert has suggested that gay couples who divorce tend to argue over "minor trivial items" than their heterosexual counterparts.

Speaking to Scotland on Sunday, Rachael Kelsey, a solicitor with an Edinburgh-based firm, said that same-sex divorce cases "tend to be very similar to straight divorces".

"The disputes will be about money and property. I think that over time the rate for splitting up will be the same as for straight couples," Ms Kelsey commented.

However, the expert suggested that in the cases that she has been involved in, "gay couples don't tend to argue about minor trivial items as much as straight ones".

According to the newspaper, since civil partnerships were legalised in 2005, there have been 1,000 in Scotland and 18,000 across the rest of the UK.

Last week, actor and comedian Matt Lucas announced that he and his partner Kevin McGee are splitting up after entering into a civil partnership 18 months ago, the Guardian reports.

The couple were engaged for seven months.
