'Huge reaction' to campaign for family court openness
23 July 2008
A newspaper campaign aiming to end the "secrecy" surrounding the UK family courts system is reporting a "huge reaction".
The Times unveiled the scheme earlier this month and is targeting what it says are stringent reporting restrictions and a lack of accountability within the system.
A special section has been launched on the paper's website with readers, MPs and family lawyers encouraged to write in and share their experiences.
Columnist Camilla Cavendish said people from different sides of the debate "seem to accept that some degree of change is needed".
However, she added secretary of state for justice Jack Straw had so far failed to comment in relation to the campaign.
The Department for Constitutional Affairs is responsible for the regulation of family courts and has published a response to a consultation on the issue of openness in the system.
Released last year, the document included comments from the public saying open records of family court proceedings should be published.
