Ofsted finds "serious and unacceptable" failings in child law support
22 May 2008
Ofsted has found failings in the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Services (Cafcass) in the south-east.
Today's report said that Cafcass offers a 'good to adequate' service for children involved in public law proceedings, but an 'inadequate' service for those involved in private proceedings.
Christine Gilbert, Her Majesty's chief inspector for education, children's services and skills, said: "Some of the services being provided by Cafcass' south-east region are adequate or better.
"But some failings are serious and frankly, unacceptable."
Ms Gilbert said children may be at risk due to delays, poor assessments and inadequate reports.
Ten recommendations have been made including eradicating delays, ensuring good quality case planning and recording, reviewing and strengthening guidance and auditing the work of all teams.
Cafcass chief executive Anthony Douglas said the problems are being urgently addressed and guaranteed there would be "significant improvements".
