Times announces family law campaign
10 July 2008
The Times newspaper has announced a new campaign designed to encourage more "openness" in the running of the UK's family courts system.
Calling on people to pledge their support for the scheme online, the publication said "serious miscarriages of justice" are happening behind closed doors.
It pointed to stringent reporting restrictions and "gagging orders" on families as evidence the current UK system is too secretive and unaccountable.
The paper has launched a special section on its website encouraging people to share their experiences and write to their MP on the issue.
The Ministry of Justice deals with the issue of openness in family courts and published a response to a consultation on the subject last year.
It said there is support for openness but "concerns about the related practicalities", saying one possibility was to allow more people to attend proceedings.
Ideas also included allowing the media to attend hearings as of right and allowing other people into proceedings via applications.
