NHS accused of employment discrimination

29 August 2008

Employment figures suggest that the NHS may be discriminating against people from minority ethnic groups, it has been claimed.

Although a third of people applying for jobs with the South East Coast NHS were from such groups, they accounted for just 16 per cent of those actually appointed, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Commenting on the issue, Rob Berkeley, deputy director of racial equality thinktank Runnymede Trust, told the Health Service Journal the pattern indicated "institutional racism".

According to the newspaper, people from black or ethnic minority groups were involved in a quarter of cases, as well as one in four reports of bullying or harassment.

Candy Morris, chief executive of South East Coast NHS, said: "We recognise that we need to do more to address the needs of black and minority ethnic patients and members of the public as well as provide greater leadership opportunities for black and minority ethnic staff members."

Healthcare Commission chief executive Anna Walker said health authorities needed to review "where their trusts are on race equality", Management in Practice reports.
