Pleural plaques consultation begins
11 June 2008
A government consultation into the decision made on pleural plaques by the House of Lords begins this month.
Last October the house ruled that sufferers of pleural plaques should no longer be able to claim compensation for their condition.
But now there are calls for this ruling to be reversed and a decision is expected to be made by the end of the year.
Justice minister Bridget Prentice says all possible options are being carefully considered and the consultation paper will detail the legal background, medical evidence and advantages and disadvantages of suggestions made.
Pleural plaques are localised, well-defined areas of thickened tissue on the pleura of the chest wall.
They normally present no symptoms or discomfort and are an indicator of exposure to asbestos.
Earlier this month a test case started in the high court to determine whether employers are liable from the employee's exposure to asbestos or from when they become ill.
