Couple win compensation after "lesbians" advert
01 August 2008
A couple have won £5,000 compensation from an estate agent after the firm publicly outed the two women as lesbians in an online advert.
Suzanne Richards, 36, and Sarah Dobinson, 44, hired Jackson-Stops and Staff to market their home in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.
But the pair were shocked to find the word "lesbians" used as a reference at the end of an advert on a property website.
The couple hired solicitors to pursue a discrimination case and settled out of court with the company, which awarded the cash for injury to feelings.
In a statement, both said: "We were both shaking with disbelief and in tears. We felt so violated."
Jackson-Stops and Staff said putting the word in the advert had been the action of an individual who had since faced disciplinary proceedings.
The firm added it had apologised to the couple and had taken prompt action to remove the offending reference from the advert.
