Drink-driving limit 'to remain unchanged'

The government does not intend recommending the legal limit for drink-driving be reduced, road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick has stated.
Speaking to the Times, the minister said the government is unconvinced that such a move would be an effective measure.
The limit is presently set at 80 milligrams (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood but Mr Fitzpatrick's predecessor Stephen Ladyman suggested last year that the government would propose a reduction to 50mg in a consultation document.
However, Mr Fitzpatrick said the paper would no longer contain such a recommendation.
"Drivers who are between 50 and 80mg are not the ones we are most worried about. It's the ones above 100," he explained.
Ireland recently announced that it would be cutting the limit to 50mg, while most other countries in Europe have already taken such steps, with some imposing a 20mg limit.
Last month, the Department for Transport reported that fatalities caused by drink-driving accidents fell by 18 per cent in 2007, compared with the previous year.
However, during this period, slight casualties resulting from such incidents increased by four per cent.
