Firms are facing a large number of personal injury claims after 36 million working days were lost in 2006 to 2007 due to sickness or harm caused in the workplace.
Insurance firm Royal Sun Alliance (RSA) also released statistics showing 11.8 million people in the UK have suffered from an illness or injury caused by their job in the last 12 months.
Over half of those who were injured at work have gone on to sue their employer, the company added.
RSA underwriting director Colin Bradbury said: "This highlights the importance of risk management in safeguarding employees' health and ensuring a productive workplace."
The variety of problems uncovered by RSA revealed one quarter of those taken ill at work had suffered from stress and anxiety and another quarter from back problems.
Four per cent suffered breathing problems and seven percent a musculoskeletal disorder.
The Press Association recently reported personal claims before the High Court more than doubled last year, with 6,000 summonses issued in 2007up 122 per cent on the 2,673 issued in 2006.
