High-speed crash headteacher wins appeal

23 May 2008

A headteacher who was banned from the classroom after a high-speed car crash left another driver paralysed has won his appeal.

Paul Davies was convicted for dangerous driving at speeds of up to 120mph and was sacked from his job and banned from teaching for two years.

A judge called him a "boy racer" and handed down a 15-month jail sentence, of which Mr Davies served three months.

The General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) said Mr Davies' conduct made it "fundamentally incompatible" for him to remain a teacher.

At the High Court today Mr Justice Blair quashed the decision of the GTCW and instead imposed a seven-month suspension, which will run to September 4th.

Mr Davies expressed delight that his appeal was successful and said he will always be sorry for the accident.

Anne Hovey of the National Association of Headteachers called the decision significant for Mr Davies and all registered teachers.

She told icWales: "It is reasoned and reasonable and takes full account of a professional record of success and achievement.

"It has always been the view of the NAHT that the sanction of prohibition was too harsh in the circumstances."
