HSE: Construction industry needs to manage risks
05 August 2008
The risks to health and safety potentially created by job cuts within the construction sector need to be effectively managed by the industry, it has been suggested.
According to figures produced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the rate of reported fatal injuries to construction workers fell by 36 per cent between 1990-00 and 2005-06.
However, concern has been raised that reducing the workforce could potentially compromise safety.
A spokesperson for the HSE said the regulator expects the construction industry to "manage the risk".
"If they are reducing the workforce, they need to ensure that all risks are covered by any impact that might have," they commented.
Personal injury statistics produced by the regulator for the construction sector in 2005-06 revealed there were 981 major injuries caused by slips, trips and falls on the level.
There were also 917 major injuries sustained by workers falling from height and 577 suffered while handling, lifting or carrying items.
