Local government pay dispute goes to arbitration

23 September 2008

The dispute over local government workers' pay has been referred to arbitration by the three unions involved.

Brian Strutton, national secretary for public services at the GMB union, said the organisation had joined both Unions and Unite in its call for arbitration.

According to Mr Strutton, the employer made a final offer of a 2.45 per cent pay increase, with a £100 a month, a year, a one-off payment addition for the lowest paid workers.

He explained a local government national agreement dictates that council employers are required to agree to arbitration and Acas is now "on standby" to appoint an independent arbitrator.

"The whole process, including submissions and hearings, should take two to three months to complete," Mr Strutton commented.

Meanwhile, councils ought to pay their final offer to ensure employees are able to cope with the current cost of living, he added.

Speaking last week, Heather Wakefield, head of local government at Unison, said it was "very clear" its members wanted the employment dispute to be resolved "as quickly as possible".
