Man wins £1.1 million personal injury case
24 July 2008
A man has been awarded more than £1 million in compensation for the personal injury he suffered after being hit by a disqualified driver riding a motorbike.
Public and private sector union Unite said one of its members had made the successful claim, but did not name the recipient.
It said the man was given £1,123,676 after he was hit by the banned rider who was trying to evade an unmarked police car which was pursuing him.
The claimant was riding his bike to work at the time and suffered the amputation of his right lower leg and a serious right shoulder injury which resulted in his right arm "being of little use". The motorbike rider was fatally injured as a result of the incident.
Unite officer Des Quinn said: "While this compensation will never make up for the injuries he sustained it does at least help him and his family."
the organisation added the personal injury claim was pursued through the Motor Insurance Bureau, which was set up to compensate the victims of negligent, uninsured and untraced motorists.
