Millions seek legal action for workplace injuries
16 July 2008
Some six million people have pursued personal injury claims against their employers, according to a report conducted by YouGov.
Undertaken on behalf of insurance firm RSA, the survey indicated that 11.8 million people have experienced health problems relating to their jobs in the last year, Personnel Today reports.
Of this group, over half had taken legal action against their employer and one in ten lodged complaints with their company's management.
A third also sought the support of their trade union, the report noted.
Commenting on the findings, Colin Bradbury, underwriting director at RSA, said: "These figures show that a significant number of injuries and illnesses are being incurred in the workplace".
This can have a "negative effect" on businesses, as well as potentially increasing costs, he added.
Health and Safety Executive figures for 2006-07 showed during this period 2.2 million people were found to have an illness they attributed to their current jobs or previous work.
Citing figures from the Labour Force Survey, the HSE noted that there were also 274,000 reportable workplace injuries during this time.
