Motorists urged to obey HA traffic officers

The Highways Agency (HA) has reminded motorists they must obey instructions given to them by traffic officers following the conviction of a van driver who broke a road block.
Derek Charley, 51, was fined £585 and issued with penalty points on his licence after admitting to driving without reasonable consideration for other road users at Tameside magistrates' court.
The incident took place in August last year, when a traffic officer established the roadblock between junctions 22 and 23 of the M60 near Ashton under Lyme.
Mr Charley was found to have breached the block, which was forced to be abandoned, almost immediately after it had been set up.
David Grunwell, north-west divisional director of the HA, said: "We hope today's conviction will remind drivers that it is an offence to ignore the instructions of traffic officers."
Last month, the Ministry for Justice announced new legislation to enable courts to hand out prison sentences to drivers who cause deaths by failing to pay due care to the road.
For the first time, available distractions, such as using a mobile phone, will be taken into consideration when sentencing.
