NHS trust fined after worker exposed to chemicals

Exposure to a hazardous chemical could have caused personal injury to a worker at an NHS trust, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS trust was fined £18,500 and forced to pay costs of £3,504.80 after an employee had been exposed to gluteraldehyde while cleaning a piece of equipment.
Inspectors discovered the employee had been cleaning the film processors without suitable safety measures in place for a number of years.
The trust pleaded guilty at Boston magistrates' court to contravening section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and regulation 5(1) of the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999.
HSE inspector Jo Anderson said the trust had placed one of its workers "at risk" by failing to implement adequate safety measures.
"All employers must have systems in place to ensure that work with hazardous substances is identified, in order that the health of employees can be properly protected," Ms Anderson explained.
This particular incident could have led to "long-term health problems" for the trust's employee, she added.
Earlier in the month, the HSE prosecuted two Essex-based companies for failing to protect their workers from exposure to asbestos.
