Personal injury claimant convicted of fraud

15 May 2008

A man who made a fraudulent claim for £15,000 compensation from Peterborough City Council after saying that he had broken his ankle on uneven paving, has been jailed for nine months.

Jonathan Lewis claimed that he had tripped on uneven pavement in August 2007, however the court heard that he had actually fallen over on private property while drunk.

The 49-year-old from Market Deeping was investigated by Peterborough City Council's investigation team who ascertained that his initial allegations were false.

After referring Mr Lewis to the police, he was then charged with fraud by false representation.

This was a charge that he denied in court, but was nevertheless found guilty of, gaining nine months imprisonment.

Commenting on the case, Peterborough City Council's fraud and investigation manager Diane Baker said she hoped the outcome would act as a deterrent to anyone contemplating committing the same offence.

"We welcome today's sentence which should serve as a stark warning to anyone who is considering committing any kind of fraud against Peterborough City Council," she said.

"We will take action against anyone who feels it is appropriate to deprive the residents of Peterborough in this way."
