Warning over safety after HSE prosecutes crane firm

Construction firms have been warned against poor planning after a company was fined £8,000 following a crane accident.
Cheshire Crane Hire was also told to pay costs of £8,842 after it was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive following the overturning of a crane in 2007.
Wirral magistrates' court heard the mobile crane keeled over after being overloaded and sited on soft ground.
HSE inspector Neil Jamieson said company managing director Frank Preston failed to explain the type of contract to his client or ask him to sign any papers.
Mr Jamieson said: "It is essential that for all lifting operations, proper planning, including careful assessment of the ground conditions and appropriate methods of work, should be adopted."
Though parked on a tarmac surface, the crane's outriggers were positioned on soft ground and it overturned while attempting to lift a 23-metre-long steel chimney stack.
Cheshire Crane Hire pleaded guilty to a breach of Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
