UK-IPO publishes new guidance

04 August 2008

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) has produced new guidance to help small businesses understand intellectual property (IP) licensing.

Its booklet How Licensing Intellectual Property Can Help Your Business is intended to provide information on how to undetake a "productive" IP licensing deal.

Commenting on the booklet's launch, Ian Fletcher, chief executive of the UK-IPO, said licensing is the "fundamental mechanism" within the IP system that enables "open innovation".

"I am delighted to publish this booklet today which provides an illuminating account of the key elements of licensing from a newcomer's perspective," he remarked.

The UK-IPO wants businesses to "gain the most value they can" from their IP, he added, stating that this can help to "accelerate innovative development".

Last month, the office called for everyone with an interest in the European commission's proposals to extend the term of copyright protection for sound recordings to "make sure their voice is heard".

Baroness Delyth Morgan, minister of intellectual property, urged interested parties to contact the UK-IPO regarding the issue before the end of August.
