Landlords invited to submit views on new code of practice

The National Landlords Association (NLA) has launched a consultation into the development of a new Code of Practice for commercial property owners involved in the sale and rent back market.
With a growing number of people experiencing financial difficulties, sale and rent back schemes could be a viable way for them to stay in their homes if they are unable to repay their mortgages, the organisation suggested.
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, said although "controversial", the process offers "flexible tenure" for people unable to meet the costs of owning their own home.
The consultation is intended to discover how the code can be improved, while also highlighting the "seriousness" with which the NLA "takes its responsibilities for raising standards", Mr Salusbury commented.
"As we have said before, people's homes are not like other commodities. We must act in order to ensure those consumers facing financial difficulty and imminent repossession are protected from rogue landlords," he added.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is currently investigating whether the sale and rent back market requires regulation.
According to the Scotsman, John Fingleton, chief executive of the OFT, said there are "potential concerns" over whether consumers are able to make "well-informed choices".
