Landlords warned about gas risk
03 October 2008
Residential property landlords have been warned about the risk posed by gas central heating systems on internal walls that may have been installed incorrectly.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) explained that the positioning and condition of some flues for gas boilers in multi-storey flats and apartments built after 2000 may put residents at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
It said poorly-maintained flues running through ceiling voids may impact upon the performance of the boiler and could potentially be producing high levels of carbon monoxide that could seep through into the living area.
Consequently, the HSE is urging landlords and other property owners to make sure all gas appliances are serviced and maintained regularly by registered installers.
The body is working with members of the property, gas and construction industries to determine how many buildings could be affected by the problem.
Earlier this year, the HSE prosecuted the owners of a company in Shropshire who falsely claimed to be Corgi-registered gas installers.
It urged people to check installers' details before allowing them to carry out work.
