Students urged to ensure landlords follow deposit laws
19 August 2008
Ahead of the new university year, student tenants are being urged to ensure their landlords are adhering to deposit protection laws.
David Salusbury, chairman of mydeposits.co.uk, said although it is a "busy time" for students, the security of their deposits is an important issue to consider.
People ought to ask their landlord "where their cash is and with whom it is protected", Mr Salusbury advised.
"The overwhelming majority of tenancies have always ended amicably but mandatory tenancy deposit protection is now just part and parcel of a landlord's legal responsibilities," he stated.
Despite the "onus" being on landlords to comply with rules, tenants need to ensure that their money is being protected, he added.
The law, introduced in April last year, has required all deposits for rent up to £25,000 in England and Wales to be protected by authorised tenancy schemes.
In order to avoid landlord disputes with tenants, each scheme is backed by a dispute resolution service to make the process more efficient and less expensive.
