Action plan published to make internet, video games safer for children
24 June 2008
The government has today published an action plan on how it intends to make the internet and video games safer for children and young people.
It was announced by children's minister Kevin Brennan, home office minister Vernon Coaker and culture minister Margaret Hodge and sets out the key milestones and deadlines to deliver Dr Tanya Byron's recommendations.
The Byron Review Action Plan outlines proposals for appointing the executive board of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety.
It will be chaired by ministers from the Home Office and the Department for Children, Schools and Families and will include representatives from industry, the third sector, law enforcement and the devolved administrations.
Mr Brennan says the internet and video games are part of everyday life for many young people and enjoying the benefits should go hand-in-hand with managing the risks.
"Our commitment to deliver the action plan ahead of time will help to continue the momentum Dr Byron set to empower parents and protect children in tackling the harms associated with the internet and video games," he comments.
According to the Office for National Statistics, nearly 15 million households in the UK had internet access last year.
