Background checks on employees are expected to become commonplace as technological development enables companies to sift through large amounts of data, an expert suggests.
Simon Pearson, director of client screening for Datanomic, says that it is now "far easier" for organisations to "systematically trawl through large volumes of data" and compare it with terrorist databases and government information.
Technology used for screening is now more "sophisticated" and can now perform "translation and transliteration" functions, Mr Pearson explains.
A report from Datanomic published last month showed that large organisations are beginning to use screening techniques as part of their overall fraud and risk management strategies.
Maintaining high levels of security is one of the main reasons that organisations screen data, Alexandra Kelly, director of pre-employment screening company Powerchex, says.
She comments: "Part of the reason that organisations are screening is that they want to make sure that their system's client data, and all other data, remains secure."
When combined with other internal controls, companies can ensure that anyone who may "potentially endanger data" is screened, the expert adds.
