Rush for Obama-Biden domain names
26 August 2008
The revelation that Barack Obama has named Joe Biden as running mate has caused a flood of interest in relevant domain names.
Online resource DomainesInfo reports "domain speculators" are purchasing online addresses which incorporate the names of the two politicians.
It notes that one "ambitious" entrepreneur was requesting starting bids of $100,000 (£54,000) for ObamaBiden.org.
The website suggests many speculators are concentrating their efforts on securing .org domains, noting these are seen as more effective politically than .com addresses.
CBS5, an online domain name and intellectual property news source, reports one American purchased obamabiden.com in 2006.
However, it notes he could face a legal challenge if he attempted to sell it to the presidential candidate, as this could be considered "cybersquatting".
This refers to the practice of registering trademark names as domains in order to sell it at a later point to the company, or registering trademarks and misspelt trademarks in order to benefit from confused traffic.
Furthermore, the website continues, recent decisions on such cases in the US have suggested the law would be on Obama's side.
