Virgin warns internet users on online music sharing
03 July 2008
An internet service provider has sent letters to customers warning them they should not be downloading restricted material posted on file-sharing websites.
Virgin Media has written to around 800 customers as part of a campaign it is running in conjunction with the BPI, which represents the UK record industry.
The BPI wants a three strikes-type system introduced in the UK, which would see providers cut the internet service of people who persistently download illegal music despite warnings.
The BBC quoted Will McGree, who received a letter in June, as saying: "It made me feel betrayed. I was under the impression that I paid Virgin Media money to keep my internet connection protected and safe."
Last month BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor said more than six and a half million people in the UK illegally access and distribute music, stating "it is plain wrong to say that this is good for music".
He said partnerships with internet service providers were the next step in the progress of the digital music business.
