Law Society urges people to be aware of legal pitfalls of divorce

The Law Society is warning that many people are unaware of the pitfalls when a civil partnership or marriage goes wrong.
It says it is "very important" for both partners to make a new will when registering a civil partnership, as it will invalidate any existing wills.
But a recent survey by the society revealed that 42 per cent of those divorced, separated or widowed do not have an up-to-date will.
It has also suggested that couples consider a pre-partnership agreement, as courts in divorce and dissolution cases often split assets in half.
Anyone currently in the process of getting a divorce or ending a civil partnership is advised to ask their solicitor to review and amend their will accordingly.
